work outfits

My work dress code is very flexible.  If I go to court I have to wear a suit.  If I have a deposition, I can dress business casual.  If I am in the office for the day, I can wear pretty much anything I want.  SOO I decided to do a little post about my various work outfits.

Disclaimer: I am not a fashion blogger (which can be seen in by the closet mirror selfies!).  Either way, here goes nothing!

I think patterned pants make things more fun.  I would consider this "business casual" and I wore it to a deposition.

Top: Ann Taylor, Pants: Zara, Heels: random, Necklace: Ann Taylor

This was worn for a casual day in the office.
Same necklace as above.  Top: Urban outfitters, Jeans: Ann Taylor, Heels: Nine west

I also wore this for a casual day in the office, but I could have worn it to a deposition too.  (Please excuse the fact that I have no make up on yet).
Sweater: Costco (yes Costco!), Skirt: Forever 21, Boots: Cathy Jean

I wore this on a casual, rainy day.  It was cozy and kept my feet dry.
Scarf: thrifted, Sweater: Ann Taylor (sensing a theme??), Cami: Nordstrom, Jeans: Joe's Jeans, Boots: Nordstrom

This is obviously a suit.  I wore this outfit to court.  I think the most important thing for suits on women is the fit.  You want a feminine suit that has darting made to accentuate the female figure and PLEASE do not buy/wear an overly tight suit.  Nothing looks more inappropriate that a girl that is wearing a suit so tight she cannot properly sit.  Not cute.  I tried to make it more fun with an embellished top and a fun hairstyle.

Suit: Anne Klein, Top: Ann Taylor, Boots: nine west

I usually wear my hair up for court.  By doing the braid on top I felt like it was a little bit more fun.

....and this is what happens when I have to read all day and I start to go cross-eyed!!

weekend in SD

I went to San Diego for the weekend.  My mom drove from Phoenix and met me there for a little mother-daughter time.  I arrived before her, so I went to my alma mater, USD to visit.  While I was there, I visited with an old professor and caught up a bit.  I loved USD so it was great to go back and visit!

Once my mom arrived we went to the Gaslamp District and had dinner

Sorry for the bad lighting, but this was delish!

Neither of us had been to the zoo since I was about 4 so we decided to revert to my youth and check it out.

slow cooker soup

Theresa and Cara came over recently for dinner.  Cara brought wine and cheese and Theresa brought an amazing salad with cheese and pears (yum!).  I was in charge of the main.  It had been cold and fall-like all week so I decided to make a hearty soup.  I didn't know what time I would be off work so I decided to take advantage of my slow cooker.

I made an amazing chicken enchilada soup.  It was super easy and the perfect hearty fall/winter dinner.

You start by browning onions and then adding spices

Then you add tomato sauce and chopped tomatos

Add that to the slow cooker bowl, along with canned corn and black beans

Then add chicken stock and boneless, skinless chicken thighs

At this point I put the whole thing in the refrigerator and let it sit over night.  The next morning I put the slow cooker in the heating machine thingy and left it for the day.

When I came home, the house smelled amazing!
I took the chicken out and shredded it with a fork

Put the chicken back in, stir and voila!
You can serve it with tortilla chips, chedder cheese, green onions and/or cilantro.

I don't often talk about my job here.  This is partly because a lot of what I do is protected by confidentiality and I can't.  It is also because most of the good stories revolve around someone yelling at me and I don't want to re-live them.

There are many aspects of my job I don't like- the first and foremost is arguing with people.  I hate that sometimes it is my job to get other people in trouble.  Other times, I catch people lying and I get them in trouble and I enjoy that, but I don't like that I enjoy it.  It feels wrong to enjoy other peoples' pain, even if they may have brought it upon themselves.

Other aspects of my job are very gratifying.  For instance, this week I settled a high value case for a big company.  It feels good to know that much trust is placed in my hands and even more, that I am capable of negotiating big settlements.  It feels good to write briefs for the Court of Appeals and win.  It feels good to take a deposition and get an expert witness to change his/her opinion.  It feels good to have spent 3 years learning to be a lawyer and to finally feel like one.

Ultimately, the thing I like most about my job though are my co-workers.  Through this job I have met 5 beautiful, smart, independent and talented women.  These women are so much more than co-workers.  We are true friends.  To celebrate this friendship, we spent the day wine tasting.  It was amazing!

Lauren and Lauren

Lauren, me, Lauren, Tara and Angie (we are missing the 6th- Melissa)

We met some mini goats wine tasting

Wine country is BEYOND gorgeous in the fall

We also met a puppy wine tasting

Clearly we love each other

weekend review

This weekend was one of those weekends that was the perfect balance of fun activities and quiet rest.

Friday afternoon our server at work went down so we all decided to go get a drink, which ended up lasting several hours.  My no plans night turned into a fun night out with co-workers.  It seemed like we were out forever, but I was home by 7 and in bed by 9, which was amazing!

We were able to catch the last express bus AND it was empty!  It was like a Christmas miracle!!

Saturday I woke up early to go play tennis.  I joined a league while I was "away."  I'll tell you guys more about that later.  I went to go get in my car and this jerk (below) decided it was a good idea to park in my driveway.  So rude!

Luckily I was able to get a ride with Sidecar and still had a great time playing tennis.  It was gorgeous weather and it was so nice to be outside...and I won, which always helps lift your mood! :)

Saturday night my two best guy friends from high school were here visiting some of their college friends who live here.  They let me crash boys night and we all went out.  They make me laugh so hard.  I haven't laughed that hard in months!  Love them!
me and Elex and our leather jackets!

Brian and me

Sunday I had every intention of sleeping in, but fate had other plans.  I woke up and I was feeling lazy and I seriously contemplated staying in bed all day, but I knew if I did I'd feel gross and depressed. SO I decided to do the exact opposite and I took the girls to the beach where we went on a jog.  It was just what I needed to lift my spirits and get me moving.

Their joy and excitement is contagious!!  I love running on the sand along the water.  It is so pretty and peaceful it doesn't even seem like a work out.
After our jog, I did my football picks for the week (of course!) and then off to church.  This was the memory verse this week so I thought I would share it with all of you!

I wear my heart on my sleeve, but I am learning to be more careful.  Now I am less afraid to let people abuse me.  I am much more apt to stand up for myself.  I do not want to ever be so jaded or bitter than I do not act from the heart.  Everything I do most certainly flows from my heart and I hope to stay that way.

How was your weekend!?  What did you do?

Part of the reason I didn't blog as promised is because my high school besties came to visit and I was busy playing...

We kicked off the weekend with brunch at Greens.  It is a vegetarian restaurant with amazing view.  The food was delicious and I did not feeling like I was missing out at all with it being vegetarian.

Following brunch we promptly took a nap!

We decided that it would be fun to cook dinner and then go out for drinks.  We had a great time cooking, eating, talking, drinking and of course taking pictures before we hit the town!

Then we hit the town!! We got to meet our friend's boyfriend and a bunch of their friends.

All the girls who came to visit (we are missing a few from our high school crew).

After our big night out Saturday, we hit up Sweet Maple for brunch.  We slept in super late so there was a two hour wait for brunch.  It ended up not being a problem though because there was a cute little coffee place next door that we hung out in.

After brunch we felt motivated and went hiking in the Marin Headlands.  It was crisp and cool, but absolutely beautiful.  Nothing like a little nature to rejuvenate the soul.  I CANNOT wait to go back!

I played hooky on Monday and hung out with Natalie.  We slept in, lounged around, did some laundry.  It was riveting, but oh so lovely.

Then I took Natalie to GG Park.

We snuggled on a blankie reading until we got too cold.

Then we got salads and these bad boys to warm up.
All and all it was the perfect weekend!  Jessica is coming back this weekend, then I see them all at Christmas when I go to LA for A WEEK! ...and news of all, they are coming to SF for NYE and we get to ring in the new year together for the first time since high school.  My friends make me so very happy.
