couch to 5K update

Week 1 of C25K went really well.  It was harder to get that third run in my schedule than I expected, but I feel like it is homework (not in a bad way) and I never missed hw so I just had to find time.  This is something I NEVER would have done with the gym so we are already making progress.  By the end of the third session I was feeling like I was ready to up the ante a bit.

Week 2 was a little bit harder than week one in general. I was struggling running with the girls so on Thursday I ran solo and that was SO much easier.  Russ has been helping by walking the girls so I can run solo....thanks!!

Week 3 went really well. Im starting to get to the point where I legitimately enjoy the "longer" stretches of running and the girls came with me Saturday and did well.  They like the longer stretches.

Tomorrow I do my first day of week four. This is the first week with much more running and much shorter periods of walking.  Im a little scared, but also excited to push myself a little and see if I can do it.

I still need to find a 5k to sign up for to force myself to finish. Ive decided that I have to sign up for one this week!

I think they like the "couch" part better!

I'll keep you guys posted on how that goes! How are your spring/summer fitness routines coming along?

weekend review & update

So sorry that I have been MIA this week.  It has been SUCH a busy week.  It's official guys...the firm I've been working for offered me a position.  I am a full time, permanent attorney.  I have a real, professional career for the first time in my life and it feels SOO good.  thanks for all your support throughout this process!

Also, this weekend my mom came to visit from Arizona for her birthday.  We had a great time! Happy Birthday mom!!

my Aunt Gigi made us this pretty bracelets

we did a champagne sailing cruise around the bay.  B literally in the Bay!

We had fish and chips at the pier over looking the sea lions.  They reminded me of Bijou when she sleeps....

we HAD to get a Mrs. Fields cookie :)

mama B, me, and Russ doing a cable car tour of the city

We also ate some yummy dinners, took a walk through the park, and made brunch at home.  It was a great weekend.

How was your weekend?

tag

I have already done a tag post so even though Monica tagged me, I am not going to tag anyone else.  However, I had nothing else to write about so I figured I'd answer her questions and let everyone get to know me a little better.

  1. How did you get into blogging?  I started reading blogs and got jealous that everyone was friends so I started one so I could meet new people too :)
  2. What is your favorite restaurant? I don't have one.  I really like trying new places and what I want totally depends on my mood.
  3. Do you have any routines that you take particular comfort in doing every day? walking my dogs.  Sometimes I hate it, but most of the time I love it.  Even if I don't want to do it or don't want to get out of bed, once we are outside I am really happy for it.
  4. What accomplishment are you most proud of?  So many from the last year- working on social anxiety/shyness in a real way (ill explain more about this in another post) and passing the bar.  Passing the bar is cliche but for a lot of personal reasons it meant more to me than many may know.
  5. If you could go back in time to any time period, where and when would it be? the Victorian Era, no question.  I should have been a Victorian lady!
  6. What is your idea of the perfect weekend? the one i just had! time with friends, time with Russ, great weather and still some down time to relax, jog and get ready for the next week.
  7. What are some of your favorite blogs to read? Monica's, Acorss the Pond, I don't claim to know much...soo many!
  8. What are your pet peeves? omg ask russ, i have a million- anything left in the walkway for me to trip on, dirty sheets, leaving the refrigerator open while you're pouring a drink or something, clutter, fidgeting, not answering a direct question or answering it with a verbose, overdone answer, rudeness, being condescending, not using coasters when people clearly have them out on the table, not separating laundry properly before washing, the list goes on!
  9. What is your favorite current TV show? hmm i dunno PanAm or Downton Abbey (both on break now :( )
  10. Salaries aside, what is your dream job? MOM/book reader/lawyer/philathropist...is that a job?
  11. Where do you enjoy shopping? online...sadly i never shop in real stores...except Kohls with my dad. Russ makes fun of me, but I do love Kohls.

weekend review

Since my last two posts were word heavy and lacked pics, ill try to use more pics this week.

Friday we went to dinner with russ' friend and his wife.  His wife, Monica, and I have become friends of our own through blogging so it was really fun to meet up with them and chat with her.  We went to this awesome restaurant Town Hall.  The food was delicious and we had this amazing pot du creme for dessert! Yum!

Saturday SF finally had nice sunny, warm weather like the rest of the country.  We took a ferry to Tiburon to go to this famous restaurant/bar, Sam's, and eat/drink on their patio.

our group at Sam's

me and Russ

it was crazy busy! the wait was 2.5 hours long! glad we got there early

Tiburon is the cutest town.

We asked this guy on a boat to take our pic.  He was from New Jersey, had an accent and was named Vinny.  We loved him and his boat!

my attempt at an outfit pic. i went with a little nautical theme.
dress: forever, sneaks: target converse, necklace: ann taylor, glasses: judith leiber

While we were at Sam's I made a new friend and she invited us to join her at Fort Mason Green.
When we got there, there was like 1000 young people partying, playing games and enjoying the sun.  It was a great day, minus our insane sunburns. I guess I'm not a so cal girl anymore if i burn that easily!

my friend Christina was there too so we got to meet up!

On Sunday, it was cloudy again, but it was perfect weather to take the girls for a little jog.  After that, I went on my first lunch blate (blog+date for any that don't know) with Lindsay.  We were so busy talking that I didn't really take any pics!  It was SO nice to meet her in person though.

The rest of my weekend was spent doing the usual errands, blah, and cleaning since my mom comes to visit next weekend!

Hope you guys had a good weekend too!

offer a lady a seat!

so what ever happened to chivalry? it's dead, right? thats what you're going to tell me?

today i was riding the bus in a dress and heels with a big bag.  i was standing up and there were about 6 guys between 20-35 sitting down right next to me. now i know the law doesn't require you to give up your seat for a lady in a dress, but really, why not?

im very grateful to have equal rights under the law and to be able to be a lawyer.  however, i don't think men and women are the same and i think that's a good thing. i love being a woman, feminine, a lady. i think most men are stronger and tougher then i am so why not be stronger and tougher and let a lady sit!?

at the end of the day, i don't even expect them to actually give up their seats for me, but it just constantly surprises me that everyday i stand on the bus, not one man had EVER OFFERED to give up his seat. if they were my sons, id smack em! (not that i have one)

what do you guys think? do you think a man should at least offer his seat to a lady on the bus?

happy hour, happy friday!

if you're just stopping by for the first time today PLEASE DONT GO! jk, no seriously, dont! haha either way welcome! thanks for stopping by and please note, there are usually lots of pics and only a little writing. i try to refrain from too many words. either way i hope you'll read this one. i think its funny :)

yesterday at work my boss sent out an email with the subject line "who's in?" the body of the email had a link to a bar and said "bocce and drinks at 5."  clearly i have an awesome boss!

needless to say, i was in! the bar had indoor bocce ball courts.  i was paired with my boss for bocce and since im a contract employee and since he is really competitive, i was a little worried that a lack of bocce skills would do me in for a shot at permanent employment.  luckily for me, somewhere inside me is an old italian man and i was actually pretty good. my boss and i kicked ass and definitely talked a lot of trash! (we are lawyers, duh!)

i thought the night would just be a drink or two and some bocce and id be home in time for dinner. WRONG! in addition to throwing bocce balls, we threw back some shots and my co-worker and i didn't make it home from "happy hour" until after 9pm.

since im the "new girl" i had to be int he office at 830 but my boss rolled in with his sunglasses on just in time to eat lunch with us! all in all it was one of the best times ive had since ive been in SF. i havent laughed so hard in a while and it was really fun to bond with my boss and co-workers. needless to say, i love my job! the only bad thing from the whole night was that it was wednesday and not friday! either way today IS friday so HAPPY FRIDAY!

dinners at home

I love to cook and I like eating dinner at home.  I have to admit Russ and I usually eat dinner at the tulip table (i.e. our coffee table...ill explain the name another day) so we can sit and watch TV.  We spend a lot of quality time together and take walks, etc. so I don't feel too bad that we eat in front of the TV.  However, I do think that since we have a lovely dining room table (thanks to Russ' parents) we should use it.

Last week we had our first dinner at the table and have decided to make an effort to eat at least one dinner a week at our kitchen table.

Since we don't eat there much we thought candles would be a nice touch.  We had lemon, rosemary slow cooker chicken, broccoli and toasted baguette with balsamic from our trip to Ojai

Tonight we are having our second dining room dinner- another slow cooker meal (noticing a trend!?)

Do you guys eat dinner at the dining room table or in front of the TV?

On sunday russ and i went and saw San Francisco Ballet.  WOW. I have a serious passion for ballet.  I love the way it feels to dance- the way you become part of the music.  Ballet was a huge part of my life WAS my life for 14 years.  I always saw that ballet was my first love and you know, no one ever gets over their first love and I certainly never did.  I never had the body to go all the way so it was bittersweet to "breakup" and move in the direction of my other love, academics.  I am really happy with the way my life has gone and the path I have taken, but it is always hard to remember that feeling.  Nothing else will ever make me feel that way and it is hard to know that I will never feel that again.  Either way, I love the ballet and I am so grateful to Russ for going to see it with me.  We saw a George Balanchine special including Divertimento No. 15, Scotch Symphony, and the oh so famous Four Temperaments.  All are so different, but so lovely.  Divertimento was my favorite.  The music by Mozart is amazing.

OK im done ranting about ballet now.  Here are some pics!

stormy

last night it was rainy with thunder and lighting.  russ and i enjoyed the show from the couch and we were both pleasantly surprised to discover that B&B didn't seem to mind it much!

this morning it had stopped raining and the sun was trying to come out.  it was so beautiful and it smelled so clean. it was a lovely morning walk.

I took this pic with my ghetto old phone so I apologize for the poor quality.  It does not do the moment justice.

pretty soon (probably this weekend) BintheBay will have a new look! Can't wait for you all to see it! I love the drafts so I think its pretty awesome!

Have a great weekend guys! Happy Friday!

new goal

With Spring here and our big summer vacation planned, I would love to try to be better about working out.  I am definitely not one of those people who thinks everyone needs to be super skinny, but I do think that it is important to stay healthy and active and that you feel better about yourself when you do.

I lack motivation to go to the gym much.  I just get bored and its so crowded that it isn't always the de-stressor I want it to be.  My friend Monica at C'est Law Vie blogged about how she did couch to 5K and has enjoyed the process.

I don't like running.  I usually get bored or tired or both and quit.  I have never run more than 2 miles at a time and that was really unpleasant.  I think it's partly because I usually try to do too much too soon.  I'm thinking about trying couch to 5k and seeing if having a set plan 3 times per week helps me feel motivated and excited about it.

you can tell im meant to be a runner! i mean check out this form!

I almost didn't blog about this because Im scared to start it and quit or hate it or something, but I figured this would hold me accountable. So here it is!  I started couch to 5k on Monday and will be doing this for the next 2 months.  I am hoping to find a 5k to run in after that.  If i sign up, then i have to stick with the program haha.

Has anyone else done this or something similar? how did it go?  anyone else have a workout plan in preparation for summer? any upbeat song suggestions to run to?

vacay yay!

Russ and i have been dating for two years and in each of those years we have done one big vacay.  These trips have been two of the best vacations I have ever been on and I really look forward to our next trip every year.  It's a great time for us to bond and relax together.  We have very similar travel styles and schedules so he is definitely my favorite travel buddy.

The first year we went to Turks & Caicos.  We rented a place with a little kitchenette so we were able to have breakfast and lunch in the room and enjoy nicer dinners out.  We did pretty much nothing but swim and lay on the beach.  My favorite part of every day was around 5pm when no one was left on the beach and the sun was beginning to set, Russ and I would go in for our last swim of the day.  We would wrestle and play and I remember laughing so hard I couldn't breath and just being so happy.  We did this everyday before going back to get dressed for dinner.  Then after dinner we would walk along the beach at night and look at the stars.  Best trip ever.

the water really looked like that

seriously?

one of our walks down the beach to dinner

Our next trip was to New York.  I'd never been before so we spent a few days in the city and then we spent a few days in upstate NY at his family's camp.  This place has been in his family forever.  Every year you go, you have to sign in this log book.  I read entries from when Russ' was three years old...so cute! Maybe someday our kids will read about our first visit there together ;)

With our friends David and Shannon at the top of the Empire State Building.
They introduced us so we are forever in their debt!

Times Square

Then hurricane Irene hit and we bought over-priced ponchos in a vain attempt to stay dry

SO for our next big trip we are going to MAUI!!! I have been to Hawaii before, but never Maui so I am really excited.  The only bummer is that I am so excited and I have to wait until September to go!!  You guys can count down with me....only 150 days (haha assuming i even counted that correctly, which is unlikely as Russ' has determined "that im not a math person")

Happy (almost) Easter!

Easter is my favorite holiday.  I love it because I love spring and because its such a good time to reflect.  After lent and "fasting" for 40 days, I like to stop and think about how I did and how it will affect or change my life.

As many of you know, I attempted to give up complaining.  It isn't like giving up chocolate where I expected to never fall short- I knew that I would slip up and slip up I did.  I definitely still complained some.  However, it made me so much more conscious of my thoughts and feelings and forced me to see what I didn't like and find the good in it so as not to whine about it.  This has been a really great experience for me because it brought a much more positive energy to my life and from that I do feel more positive and happy.  This is definitely something I am going to try to continue on with and I encourage you all to try it.

For Easter, we are going to church and brunch with Russ' parents.  The weather here is beautiful and I am looking forward to church, relaxing and enjoying this beautiful spring weather.

What have you learned from your lent experience?  What are you doing for Easter?

Here are some pretty flowers to get you in the mood for spring!
