my best friend...

I have been reading a lot about girlfriends on other peoples' blogs and decided to share with you all about my best friend.  my best friend is Shelby.  She is pretty awesome.

we met in college because we were in the same sorority.  we decided to live together with 2 other girls our sophomore year.  we didn't actually like each other, but then one weekend our other two roomies (who both had boyfriends) left to go visit them and we were stuck together.

we went to the beach and hung out and realized we actually have a lot in common and get along really well.  since then we have stayed really close.

shelby is married to an amazing man who loves and adores her and serves our country as an army ranger. her first year of marriage she endured an entire year away from him while he was deployed in Iraq. i get upset when russ goes away for the weekend.  this girl is strong!

now they have the cutest (im not exaggerating) little son named Hunter.

shelby is a wife, a mother, and a brilliant (graduated with a 4.0, like seriously who does that?) physician's assistant.  she is the kind of friend who always remembers your birthday and sends nice cards for no reason. she is always there for you and always makes you want to be a better person. and she runs marathons...pregnant! i am so honored to be her best friend.

She is going to kill me for this, but this was the night of initiation of our sorority. clearly we were very sleep deprived at this point.

we studied abroad at the same in France, her in Ireland and we met in London

celebrating her birthday

could she be more beautiful? and what an awesome hubby!
i cried the whole freaking was the best wedding ever!
at her baby shower.

and the wedding led to this little guy! this is when i first met him at about 1 month old.  he is older now and doesnt look anything like this. he is still beyond cute tho!

weekend review

we went up to Tahoe this weekend to get away and it was amazing! we went snowboarding on Saturday, snow shoed and ate lots of yummy food cooked by russ' mom and dad.

I love snow boarding, but I hate ski lifts.  When I was a kid, I had a little incident where i fell off the lift getting off and it hit me in the back of the head and i slid backwards under it= traumatized.  ive held this with me and get serious anxiety when i have to get off them.  the first run we went on this trip, i almost started crying it was so intense.  however, russ calmed me down and told me to think "just go strait." that helped and it actually seemed to work!  this trip i only fell once getting off (which is a serious record for me) and the one time wasn't really my fault because the ski lift stopped abruptly just as we were about to get off! russ said it doenst count so im takin it! go me! :)

After we went snowboarding russ made me snow shoe to the top of this mountain. i thought i was going to die about halfway up. he didnt relent tho so i had to keep going. i made it to the top and i got a kiss= totally worth it (minus the fact that i cannot walk today).

this is me in the beginning before i knew russ intended to go all the way up

this is me trying to breath and smile

the view from the top

it was so steep we decided to slide down. the girls were struggling so i decided they should ride on my lap. we caught a lot of speed (notice brussy's ears) and it got a little out of hand. i had no idea you could get "snow burn" but i now know you can.

near the bottom we could walk again

B&B handling the snow like champs. i could not believe Bijou agreed to pee in the snow. props to her! i sure as heck wouldnt!

sunday we had flurries

brussy was hunting in the snow and would dig holes with her mouth trying to find things...she never found anything but more snow .

Bijou enjoying the heated floor :)

On the drive home we felt like we were in Ireland.  It was soo green and pretty (beautifully photographed by russell ;)

Bijou has made progress in the car. she went under the blankie and half laid down.  she did not, however, give up panting. one can dream.

what did you guys do this weekend?

Happy Monday!

this week at work has been very busy, hence the lack of posting. however, i passed the 1000 pageviews marker and that made me very excited! thanks for stopping by even tough i've kind of sucked this week!  the good news is that im loving my job so at least my absence is for something good.

tm is friday and russ and i are escaping the city and heading to the mountains! his parents have a house up there and we cannot wait to enjoy the snow, trees and fresh air.  theres something about reconnecting with nature that grounds a person. also the girls (B&B) have never seen snow before so this is gonna be good! i cant wait! ill be taking lots of pictures and sharing them on monday!

also, bay area bloggers, come to this meet up! its gonna be awesome! the date says April ? but right now it is scheduled fro April 14 at 1:30. lunch and nice ladies, what could be better!?

i will read.

i work in oakland and i live in the city, thus i commute to work.

i take a 20 min bus ride and then a 10 min train ride to get to work, all with very little walking in between (which is nice). the thing i love about my commute is that since im not the one who is driving, i am free to fall asleep (not really, but zone out) and more often then not, read.

when i was in law school i read a lot, but because i read thousands of pages of cases and statutes each semester, there wasn't too much time or energy left for casual reading. i am so thrilled to have the time and energy for this now!

i am old school and i LOVE real books. in fact, i collect old ones. someday i am going to have a library filled with real books and my kids are going to be bewildered because no one will have them anymore. however, barnes and noble's mass marketing campaign won me over, that and the fact that they called there e-reader "nook" and who doesn't love a nook.  check out their commericial....

after seeing this russ and i would read in bed, me with a real one and him with an ipad. every night id ask him "wanna by nook or by book?" and then finally i got one!

i have the basic nook because i has the e-ink technology.  i find it very useful for traveling in case i finish a book and so i dont have to bring so many actual books with me.

what do you guys prefer? if anyone has a nook (or its app for ipad), wanna be LendMe friends and share books?

any book suggestions for my commute? (yes, ive already read all the hunger games).

by book or by nook, i will read. forever.

st. pattys

san franciscans love st. patty's day.  we went to north beach and went to an irish bar Maggie McGarry's.  then we went to this other bar, O'Reilly's , that blocks off the street and has a HUGE block party!

this is why i love him!

Russ pulled the four leaf clovers off his glasses because he said having "flowers" on them was girly! haha

Jaclyn (left) came down from Sacramento so we got to all hang together!! :)

the block party was insanely crowded

while we waited in line it started to hail. thank goodness we had umbrellas

we started so early that russ and the girls were asleep on the couch by 8pm (yes he might kill me for posting this)

Happy Monday!

happy st. patricks day! russ and i went to the bar at 11am, which is why i am home and in jammies at 645 pm...just how i like it!  sorry about the lack of blogging. i am finding that having a real, full-time job makes it hard for one to read and write awesome blogs everything. im realizing that it is hard to balance chatting on the phone with the fam, going to the gym, hangin with russ, seeing friend and all other normal duties of an adult all while working. i know you all think i suck, but ive never done this before and it certainly is an adjustment. ill get the hang of it!

anyways.... here is some green soup for you! im belgian (hence B) and we love ourselves some leek so here is some leek soup i made....

traditional soup is potato leek, but i put other veggies in to make it more nutritious

this is the pre-cut leek from TJs. i like the green ends for soup, but other people claim they are inedible.

sautee everything

cut the leek in coins and add it in

add in some garlic

add in a potato

add some chicken or veggie stock

bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. cook until super soft. add herbs and salt to taste

puree to the consistency you like. (those are russ' hands in case you were thinking my hands looked awfully hairy and manly!)

jar and freeze. i eat some and freeze some. that way russ and i have a healthy dinner on hand if we need one.

have a great weekend!

girls night in

i have a group of girlfriends from high school i am still really close with and love dearly. sadly we are kind of scattered (1 in canada, 1 in SF, 1 in Sacramento, 2 in LA and 1 in our hometown) and we are all busy so it is hard to get together.  however, Christina moved to SF about two months before I did.  We haven't seen each other yet since i moved here (except when we randomly ran into eachother on the a cool local would do!;) but tonight she came over to hang and make pizza.

i often buy pre-made dough from TJs because its super easy and its awesome. however, the 5 minute drive after work just seemed like too much effort yesterday(im spoiled because i used to live directly next door to one). SO instead, i decided to make some pizza dough last night with my kitchenaid since i never use it.  it was sooo incredibly easy to make and it tasted delish.  here are some pics...

this was our giant veggie pizza before we cooked it. unfortunately there are no after it was cooked pics because i got so excited to eat it that i totally forgot...oops!

me and christina back in high school...WOW blonde hair and chubby cheeks!

me and some of the girls 2 years ago wine tasting in monterey
(jaclyn, jess, me, christina)

cheers to girls night!

weekend summary

friday night russ went out to dinner w a friend. i ate leftovers lying on the couch FINALLY watching the HELP. not gonna lie guys, i didn't love the movie the way i did the book. so sad.
then i went to bed at 10pm (yes i am 80 on the inside)

saturday we went to a cool restaurant in SF.

it looked like this from the outside and i was skeptical...

but then we entered and it was this cute patio with nice views

russ and his friend from elementary school, max

the views/atmosphere were great. the food was good, but not amazing.

Saturday we went out to russ' hometown to visit friends.  we went to dinner and then went out to play darts, where i promptly learned that darts are not my calling
pat and morgan workin out the rules

morgan and me....we both hated this pic but i posted it anyways cause i love morgan and wanted her on here :)

as we were leaving out the back door we saw wet cemet and russ wrote this in it with his key
(this is where i leave out the part where i told him to do it so you all think he is super mushy!)

then sunday we ran errands since we were in the burbs and did laundry. one of our tasks was getting new tags for the girls with our new address. they used to be carved into metal but now they are high tech and do it with a laser...check it out!

happy monday guys!
